Radona was charged for this case when a patient came to the Vanderbilts University medical center. The patient was having a savior headache and was also losing vision. The patient visited a doctor, and the doctor prescribed the medication. Medication was to be given by the nurse, in which Radona Vaught was involved.
The doctor prescribed versed medication, which was to be given to the patient before an MRI scan. It requires the patient to be still for approximately fifteen minutes. The verse is a sedating drug used to induce sleepiness in the patient- it reduces anxiety. Radona couldn’t find the drug prescribed and chose another drug, thinking it must be suitable for the patient as per the problem. Vadona injected Vecuronium, which in simple words, is a paralyzing drug, which, when injected, the patient does not feel anything, and it is used when surgeries are to be performed.
As soon as she injected the inappropriate drug, the patient’s brain lost consciousness. The doctors said that she would remain brain dead if she lived. At that time, the patient was kept on a machine to keep her alive, and she died as soon as she was removed from the machine. The investigation after this incident found that multiple patient safeguards that should be performed in the hospital weren’t being performed.

Trial after the incident
After the incident occurred, the court proceedings began. When Radona was asked to say something, she said that because of the hospital’s computer system upgrades and the delays caused in understanding the system while providing medication, we had to use the override function as we couldn’t ask everything to the doctor again. She also said that all the nurses use the override function to perform their appointed responsibilities.
The hospitals also negotiated an out-of-court settlement with the family. After this, the family was not speaking up against the system and Radona. In an out-of-court settlement, two parties are involved in which the party responsible for a crime or a murder makes a deal with the party who faced the crime or the murder, and the latter then do not speak up against the other in court proceedings. The deal is usually made by compensating the oppressed with a particular amount.
The trial of Radona began on the 21st of March 2022, the delay occurred because of a pandemic that affected the whole world, and everyone stayed in their homes and avoided meeting people in person to control the disease. Finally, after the pandemic ended, Radona was sentenced to three-year probation in Nashville criminal court by judge Smith. She was charged with three violations:
